How to handle 90 Days' Notice Period

Hello Reader,

Hope you're having a great day!

This is the Fifth edition of the Newsletter I am writing for Software Testers on this platform.

One common question I get in LinkedIn DMs is "How to Handle 90 Days' Notice Period". This article is mostly applicable to folks in India. The Companies in India has 90 days' notice period and QA folks often feel stuck in current job mostly in Service based MNCs.

I have worked earlier in MNCs like HCL (5.5 years), Infosys (2.5 years) which has 90 days' notice period.

And like most folks, I am also bit frustrated sometimes as most of the HR folks look for Immediate joiners. This is due to multiple reasons like Companies has to fill the contract positions soon and also as Candidate does offer shopping during notice period, holding multiple offers and do not join in last minute in many cases. I am not saying this is correct or wrong here, just adding a perspective.

Understand that there are Companies which still give offers for 90 days, but it takes some time and effort in the Job market. Do not expect to get calls immediately and also explore the MNCs like TCS and many Product-based companies do give 90 days offers for Long Term opportunities for good candidates who clear their Interviews.

Now let's understand what kind of strategy, to handle 90 Days' notice period.

First point is you should not resign without Job offers, if you have financial liabilities and commitments. 2024 and 2025 is a difficult job market, without Skillset having enough opportunities and Hand's on experience, it would be difficult to get placed with new job.

You can plan your preparation and spend at least 2 to 3 months minimum, on topics which are your focus area. Increase your Hand's on experience with Practice and get Confident on your skillset by working on them.

Now attempt companies for other cities, which you would not join. Also mention Notice period as 30 days, and say I am getting released in current project. So, it is possible to get release from company easily.

So why attend other city Interviews? If it is online Interviews, you can attend from your Home, and it can help with your Interview preparation.

Without attending any Interviews and Preparation, if you directly attempt the Interviews in your City location. Maybe you could miss some opportunities if the company has some rules like cannot attempt again for 6 months, or if you got Offer Letter for 30 days' notice period, you would be under lot of stress if current company does not accept to release early.

By attempting some companies and if you are able to crack Companies from other cities, it could help to boost your Confidence levels.

When you attempt Job opportunities for your Location, and you want to get early release in your Company. Then First of all get Offer Letter by saying I can get release from my Company in 45 to 60 days. If it is possible for 90 days offer do not negotiate with new company.

Now let's say you got an Offer with 30 to 45 days with New Company, also analyze if that Company, opportunity is good enough.

Do not say in current company that I got new Job offer and I have to get early Release to join there. If you have dependency in Project, mostly they won't give early release and drag till 90 days. If there is No dependency mostly, they release you and in MNCs if you are on Bench period (outside project) they would release early.

If you are comfortable, saying like Medical reasons or Family commitments - Need to resign from job and need early release in 20 to 30 days to take care of these Commitments and want to take some break in job. Say these reasons and decision is up to you. Just I am sharing some suggestions, which could be considered as an option. Think about the Risk of leaving existing job and if new opportunity is really stable, this can be thought about. Ask for Notice period buyout option in Current company if there is such option.

90 Days' Notice period is often tricky, but remember you only need ONE good opportunity to job switch. It can take some time (3 to 6 months) usually when in Job searching mode, if you had already spent time in Preparation on your Skillset.

During the Serving 90 days' Notice period, you have any option to attempt few more Good companies and select other companies Offer based on the Benefits. But notify the waiting company and don't take it still last minute as they were waiting for you giving 90 days Offer letter.

Best wishes in your Job search, if you are exploring one. Else keep learning and upskilling. Do not depend on the Existing Job to teach the Market trending skills.

Best time to learn New Skills & Practice is while you are in Job and Not having any stress to Switch Job immediately. So, spend few hours every week or 15 minutes daily basis. There is no company which has Job security till retirement in IT Industry.

Consistent Learning could help you in long term to crack Good companies easily.
